TYPES OF SURGERIES
Why
should I choose surgery to lose weight? Unfortunately, although
diets work for a little while, the effects seldom last and the
answer to Morbid obesity
needs to last a lifetime. No diet program, even the drug programs
such as Redux and Fastin are powerful or adequately long-lasting
enough to reduce the necessary sustained weight loss in the severely
obese. There has never been a scientific study which has shown
that dietary management is beneficial or effective in the severely
obese.
Look
at how much your health is at risk and consider taking some risk
to achieve a more lasting solution, surgery, to change your body's
physiology, and to help you to gain control on your weight. In
our opinion, surgery is the only effective way to achieve lasting
weight control and a healthy body weight.
Roux-En-Y Gastric Bypass
We
consider Gastric bypass to be the premium operation, offering
that best combination of maximum weight control and minimum nutritional
risk. It is considered to be the "gold standard" of
modern obesity surgery. I have over ten years of experience with
over 500 of these procedures and strive to refine this technique
and it's method to produce the maximum sustained loss achievable.
This
operation achieves its effectiveness by creating a very small
pouch (thumb-sized) from which the rest of the stomach is permanently
divided and separated. The small intestine is cut is rearranged
so as to provide an outlet to the small stomach, while maintaining
the flow of digestive juices at the same time. The lower part
of the stomach is bypassed and food enters the second part of
the small bowel within ten minutes of the beginning of the meal.
The
operation works by reducing food intake and reducing the feeling
of hunger and with mal-absorption of the nutrients that are eaten,
reducing the caloric intake even further.
This
procedure provides an excellent tool for gaining long-term control
of weight without the hunger or cravings usually associated with
small portions or with dieting. Weight loss of 80%-100% of excess
body weight is achievable for most patients and long-term maintenance
of weight loss is very successful with adherence to a simple and
straightforward behavior regimen.
This
procedure can be done laproscopically or with an open incision.
Adjustable
Gastric Banding
Gastric
Banding is a variation of Gastroplasty, in which the stomach is
neither opened nor stapled. It is a process where a band is placed
on the outside of the upper stomach, to create an hour glass shaped
stomach and to produce a small pouch with a narrow outlet. The
special device used to accomplish this is made of implantable
silicone rubber and contains an adjustable balloon. This allows
us to adjust the function of the band without another operation.
The following advantages are:
- It
can be inserted laproscopically without a large incision
- It
does not require any opening in the gastrointestinal tract,
reducing the risk of infection
- There
is no staple line to come apart
- It
is adjustable
This
operation may be particularly suited to persons weighing up to
300 pounds, who need to find a rapid and more convenient
solution and to return to full activity very quickly. Business
people, sales people and the self-employed. Although its' effects
may not be as profound as the gastric bypass, the risk of the
procedure appears to be less and the recovery time is the shortest.
